Elkhart, Indiana
Project Detail Information
The City of Elkhart, Indiana commissioned Leedy/Cripe Architects, Inc., in association with Lehman & Lehman, Inc. and Wightman Petrie Engineering, to assist in extending the Riverwalk Commons Riverfront Development along the Elkhart River following the master plan done by the same project team.
The development enhances the city’s river corridor green in the downtown area and creates a catalyst for new development in adjacent parcels. The design process included gathering input from community-wide focus groups and steering committee sessions. The design team addressed civic functions and new potential development use, environmental and flooding issues, and urban park potential.
The Master Plan provides pedestrian and streetscape connections throughout the Riverwalk project and to surrounding sites with access to the river. The project also includes improved river edge walkways, pedestrian paths under vehicular bridges, observation decks, pedestrian bridges, seat walls, colored concrete paving, water fountains, a performance stage, an ice rink/playground, interpretative signage, and open lawn areas.
