Elkhart Public Library
Elkhart, Indiana

Project Detail Information

The Elkhart Public Library is in the planning stages of a new library campus in the downtown area. Located adjacent to the Elkhart River, the proposed library will be built on the former Elkhart Foundry site, emphasizing urban renewal in downtown Elkhart.

Lehman & Lehman teamed up with the architects of Engberg Anderson Design Partnership and prepared the conceptual site development plan for the library. The proposed library campus will feature a 120,000-square-foot facility, a tree lined street entrance, parking for 300 automobiles, a drive-up book drop-off, and an outdoor children’s garden. Connection to the newly constructed Elkhart Riverwalk is also part of the library development.

Cost of the new building and site development is estimated at $25 million, which includes $15 million for the library construction and $10 million for the demolition of the foundry, site development, landscape enhancements and site furnishings.
