Whiting Park Shoreline Revitalization
Whiting, Indiana

Project Detail Information

URS Greiner Woodward Clyde Consultants commissioned Lehman & Lehman to assist with the design and development of a Conceptual Master Plan as a part of the Preliminary Engineering Study for the Whiting Park Shoreline Revitalization. The City of Whiting plans to redevelop a 1,900-foot stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline along its 22-acre Whiting Park. This study identified the fundamental forces affecting the shoreline of Whiting Park, developed shoreline stabilization design concepts, and proposed improvements based on the developed design concepts.

Conceptual Master Plan elements included new revetments and breakwaters; a walkway and/or bike path connecting Whiting Park with adjacent shoreline/City developments; optimization of surface parking; a 30 to 50 slip transient marina; and shoreline landscaping. Standards were established for landscape plant materials, security and safety elements, pedestrian circulation, lighting, signage, and recommendations for improvements that would be eligible for funding (such as a transient marina).

Other consultants involved in this study included Shabica & Associates, Inc. (Coastal Engineers) and Michael J. Chrzastowski, Ph.D., P.G. (Coastal Geologist).
