Burr Ponds Park Master Plan
Adrian, Michigan

Project Detail Information

The City of Adrian proposed redeveloping an existing 12-acre neighborhood park that was once used as a State Fish Hatchery. The existing site featured two ponds controlled by a concrete dam, a stream, a narrow walking path and a picnic shelter, all in need of repair. The City’s goal was to create a peaceful park setting incorporating the renewed ponds, looping walkways, picnic areas and a large shelter with restrooms.

After holding several public meetings in order to gather input, Lehman & Lehman created a Comprehensive Master Plan for Burr Pond Park that integrated the City’s and public’s goals into a design requiring relatively low overall maintenance. The plan included removal of the leaking concrete dam and development of a new overflow structure that features a waterfall; new fish habitats, native stone and plant material borders; looping walkways for pedestrians and bicycles; fishing piers; a pedestrian bridge; and a new picnic pavilion with restrooms near the main parking areas. The plan also specifically added stones and wetlands to flood prone areas of the park in order to enhance the aesthetics of the existing stream.

Construction of the park is planned in two phases as funding becomes available.
