Michiana Regional Greenways & Trails Visioning Charrette

Project Detail Information

The Michiana Regional Greenways & Trails Visioning Charrette (MRGTVC), held June 14, 2005, served as a way to explore inter-county and inter-state coordination of greenway / trail development efforts through a visioning model. The project, facilitated by Lehman & Lehman, allowed for open communication between various local, regional and national organizations and planning groups in ten counties and two states.

Lehman & Lehman worked with the National Park Service and St. Joseph County Parks (IN) to assist “County Captains” from the 10 counties (LaPorte, St. Joseph, Elkhart, Lagrange, Starke, Marshall and Kosciusko in Indiana and Berrien, Cass and St. Joseph in Michigan) in holding “mini-charrettes” with stakeholder and community members in their respective counties, creating a county-level Vision for greenways and trails.

Approximately 45 people participated in the MRGTVC. The entities represented include the U.S. Congress, Indiana House of Representatives, National Park Service, Indiana DNR, Regional Master Planning Organizations, Indiana and Michigan Department of Transportation, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, City and County Parks and Park Boards, City and County Governmental Departments, and interest groups (such as the Michiana Bicycle Association). The resulting Vision and tools for the promotion of trails and greenways can be found at www.sjcparks.org.
