South Bend, Indiana
Project Detail Information

South Bend Parks and Recreation commissioned Lehman & Lehman to assist in the design and development of a new water playground at Kennedy Park. Lehman & Lehman worked in cooperation with nationally recognized aquatics designers Water Technologies, Inc. (Beaver Dam, Wisconsin) and architects CTG Associates (Mishawaka, Indiana). This project served as the first phase of a multi-aquatic development program for the City based on an Aquatics Feasibility Study prepared by Lehman & Lehman in December, 1998.
This water playground is a unique development. It is not considered a swimming pool, but a playground with water elements for youth and families. The facility was built near the site of the old Kennedy Swimming Pool and accommodates up to 325 bathers at a given time. The water playground contains several water activities including fountains, waterfalls and a large central structure similar to a typical park play structure, but with user-controlled water activities.
The development includes a restroom/changing facility with areas for office use and storage, a spacious concrete deck, and mounded landscaped areas adjacent to the deck.
