LEHMAN & LEHMAN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT EARNS STORMWATER CERTIFICATION

Lehman & Lehman’s Michael Bultinck has successfully completed the training and examination necessary to become a certified stormwater pollution prevention preparer (CSWPPP). Professionals certified as a CPSWPPP are also certified to implement and inspect sites for stormwater compliance.

With CPSWPPP certification, Mike has exhibited fundamental knowledge of all aspects of erosion and sediment control and has the ability to:

  • Make proper and informed decisions on the information to include in the preparation of a compliant stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP);
  • Measure the design needs of the site due to soils, type and size of construction project and fundamentals of proper erosion and sediment control design techniques;
  • Describe and understand proper installation, maintenance and inspection of best management practices;
  • Assess a construction site to determine proper stormwater compliance and provide assistance to the construction workers in how to maintain a compliant stormwater site; and
  • Understand the teamwork and communication necessary between owner, operators, and SWPPP designer so the site stays in compliance throughout the construction project.

Congratulations, Mike!

BURR PONDS PARK CELEBRATES GRAND RE-OPENING

On Saturday May 31, citizens of Adrian, Michigan, along with representatives of the City government, Parks Department and Lehman & Lehman, Inc. gathered to celebrate the grand re-opening of Burr Ponds Park. Three ribbons were cut: one for the park itself, and one for each of the park’s two fishing piers.

LEHMAN & LEHMAN CELEBRATES EARTH DAY

Today–April 22, 2008–is Earth Day. Since its inception in 1970 by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, its purpose has been to provide environmental education and motivate people to action across the globe to save our planet. In the United States, Earth Day has been utilized to promote fair climate change legislation, which focuses on limiting the amount of dangerous emissions into the atmosphere.

From a Landscape Architectural perspective...

Earth Day invites us to a greater awareness of our environment and challenges us to be good stewards of the land. Along with other design professionals, Landscape Architects strive to create sustainable landscapes that will endure beyond the present generation. Several ways we can promote sustainability include: specifying recycled landscape construction materials, preventing erosion through design, creating parking lots with permeable pavers through which rainwater can be collected and used for irrigation, and designing land plans with strategically-placed trees and shrubs to keep buildings cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. As Landscape Architects, we’ll do our part to create sustainable landscapes.

Here are some simple ways YOU can promote a sustainable future TODAY:

  • Go “Nalgene”: Instead of purchasing bottled water, bring a re-usable water bottle to work with you. If you’re concerned about the quality of your tap water, buy a filtration pitcher to keep in the fridge, and use that to fill your re-usable bottle.
  • Recycle: For those with recycling programs, it’s as simple as disposing of recyclable items in the proper receptacle. Even if you don’t have a recycling program, you can re-use paper by printing on both sides before discarding.
  • Carpool: You’ll save on gas and make new friends.
  • Re-use: Think of creative ways to re-use plastic shopping bags, or purchase cloth grocery bags to take to the store with you.
  • Plant a Tree (or donate to an organization that will plant a tree for you, such as http://www.plantabillion.org/)

HAPPY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE MONTH!

No fooling – the month of April is National Landscape Architecture Month, a month designated to increase awareness of the profession and the environment. What is the significance of April? It includes Earth Day on April 22 and the birthday of Fredrick Law Olmsted, the “father of Landscape Architecture," on April 26. This year’s theme, “Discover Careers in Landscape Architecture,” is geared toward school-aged children and educators. American Society of Landscape Architecture (ASLA) Chapters across the country will celebrate by facilitating public outreach activities to further the field.

Most people are not aware of the growth of the Landscape Architecture profession. According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, Landscape Architecture is the fastest growing discipline of the design professions, with demand projected to increase 18-26 percent over the next six years. The horizon looks bright for the field of Landscape Architecture, and with the ASLA, we celebrate by sharing our resources.

In honor of National Landscape Architecture Month, Lehman & Lehman is giving back to the community. On April 12, the Lehman Team will be donating time to conduct a design charrette* at Clay Church in South Bend. The charrette will focus on the development of a prayer garden on the church’s new North Campus, and include discussion about its function, capacities, features, location, aesthetics and materials. The team hopes to develop several design concepts during the charrette and educate attendees about the field of Landscape Architecture.

*A charrette is, “a rigorous and inclusive planning process undertaken by a design team over a brief period of time” (National Charrette Institute).

CHUCK LEHMAN ATTENDS IACCA CONFERENCE

Lehman & Lehman President, Chuck Lehman, ASLA, recently attended the annual meeting of the International Association of Conference Center Administrators (IACCA). This professional gathering brings together leaders of conference facilities in the growing not-for-profit sector, including religious, collegiate, governmental, 4-H, YMCA, scouting, and community based not-for-profit conference and training centers.

This year’s conference was held at the C.A. Vines 4-H Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, and featured the theme Your Work – Our World; Using Technology for Better Work in a Better World. It focused, primarily, on the merging of old fashioned values and comfort with high tech services and support to meet the increasing demands of guests.

Technology has always been a double-edged sword, offering hope for a better world, yet bringing consequences and demands of its own. How can conference center professionals make effective use of technology without being enslaved by it? What is the balance between efficiency and genuine hospitality? When is technology good for the environment, when is it harmful and how can we know the difference? The conference addressed these issues through a keynote presentation, panel discussion and 16 different workshop opportunities.

The knowledge gained at the conference will enable Lehman & Lehman to better serve clients in the hospitality industry.

In addition to hosting the annual conference, IACCA provides professional education and internationally recognized certification for conference center professionals. Founded in 1976, the organization is headquartered in Vero Beach, Florida. Learn more about IACCA by logging on at www.iacca.org.

ADVISORY TEAM HELPS PROTECT NATURAL RESOURCES IN SOUTH BEND (adapted from The South Bend Tribune)

The South Bend Parks and Recreation Department is working to draft a Natural Resources Management policy with the help of the natural resources advisory team. This team, including our own Chuck Lehman, combines volunteers from various disciplines—civil engineering, parks and recreation, landscape architecture, naturalism, forestry, and grounds managing—who are experts in environmental management. Together, they’ve helped the Parks Department to create the first draft of the policy, which highlights 12 parks resources in need of protection.

This policy is the first of its kind in the county, and may be used as a sample for other city and park departments to follow. One of its goals is to provide long-term sustainability for the parks, preserving spaces through first documenting current resources. The policy will also help meet requirements for accreditation by the National Recreation and Parks Association, something that will enable the Park Department to receive more grants. In addition to protecting the city’s natural resources, the Parks Department hopes this policy will raise public awareness about the importance of protecting the environment.
